Week 3: Identifying Local Opportunity

Sun-Sentinel

1.     Anti-gambling group takes aim at Seminole deal
·      An anti-gambling group in Florida are trying to derail the state’s deal with the Seminole tribe. They believe that it is poor policy. The Seminoles continue to be sued and are going to the people for help.
·      The problem is that anti-gambling groups are fighting against the Seminoles gambling policy and the Seminoles are fighting back.
·      Both the anti-gambling groups, Seminoles and the gamblers have the problem
2.     Companies worried about secrets falling into hands of Office Depot, Staples
·      Corporate customers of Office Depot and Staples are trying to limit access to information from the FTC during its review of the merger. The FTC rejected Staple’s acquision of Office Depot because they thought it would cause higher prices for consumers.
·      The problem is that merging the companies would cause consumers to have to pay more.
·      The problem effects consumers and Staples executives.
3.     Homebuilder companies strike deal in bankruptcy case
·      Eight companies associated with John B. Kennelly have reached a deal with the bankruptcy court. They now have extended time. They now have motivation to get the properties sold.
·      The problem is that these companies are facing bankruptcy.
·      The problem effects these eight companies.
4.     Davie wants more money from Seminole gambling deal
·      Davie is seeking more money from the Seminole gambling deal because they believe it has caused their city traffic and for public safety. The amount they were seeking is “substantial.”
·      The problem is that the casino is effecting the city of Davie and its residents and they aren’t being compensated for it.
·      The problem effects the residents of Davie
5.     Wal-Mart to close more than 150 U.S. stores
·      Wal-Mart is closing 269 stores between the US and Brazil. The store closings are for financial reasons. They claim they are going to try and accommodate workers.
·      The problem is that the store closings will effect workers and cause more unemployment.

·      The problem effects Walmart employees in those areas.

  1. Nice picks; you went straight to the gambling and I like it. Two stories on the Seminole gambling deals and both equally good. The casino business continues to corrupt and be corrupted; however, at least there are healthy debates going on for the subject in Florida. That said, I also was very intrigued by the Office Depot / Staples merger considering it seems like this is the third time their merger has been blocked. At work today I am dealing with a similar merger situation that is under review by the department of justice. Thanks to my economics class I understood why they were looking at the merge creating a monopoly (and I could recognize their questions as pointing to such). Good post -

  2. Hi Gabie,

I really enjoyed the blog. One that I found interesting was the closing of the closing over Wal-Mart. Wal-mart has informed the public that they will be transferring the workers to other stores, but in reality the majority will be laid off, mostly in the Brazil locations, where this workers rarely have worker rights in their country.

  3. Gabie, I enjoyed all the stories you discusses. I was especially interested in the article relating to the major companies worried about secretes falling into the wrong hands. That could be a major problem for them as well as the market base that they supply. I found a similar story relating to the city commissioner of Gainesville being accused of a scandal. If you would like to check out the stories I found, here's my post: http://scottysscene.blogspot.com/2016/01/identifying-local-opportunities.html
